Express Retail – The Products

June 4th, 2010
Web Edition Express Retail Sales

Let’s continue our discussion of fast retail transactions. Now that we know who our customer is, we can identify the products that our customer plans to purchase.

You can select the line items for your retail transaction in two ways using our Web Edition HME software:

  • you can click the Product smart lookup; or,
  • you can use a USB bar code scanner to record the universal product code (UPC) or a custom bar code label, which you can print through Web Edition.

We recommend the scanner to maintain speed and accuracy in a high volume retail environment; otherwise, the Product smart lookup will suffice. You can decide which will be better for your business since you can use either method at any time.

Once you select a line item, you may override the product description, retail price and tax amounts. Web Edition automatically calculates sales tax for up to five tax authorities to account for any state and local combination for each line item.

Continue to add and change line items as needed. All products display in a list with running totals until you’re ready to check out.

That’s where we’ll leave it for now. We’ll cover the express retail sales check out process next time.

New Revenue Streams – Retail

September 2nd, 2009
Retail Point-of-Sale

As the third party order realizes less reimbursement, HME providers have two choices to remain viable: reduce costs or seek new revenue. Which direction have you gone? Have you tried a little of both?

One of the more obvious revenue streams is retail, which promotes quick cash f low. Even if you believe you don’t have the traditional floor space necessary to display certain products, you can display products online.

You may be surprised at the number of consumers who may be willing to purchase medical equipment and supplies at retail. It may be worth your time to test a few products.

Most HME software offers built-in retail, so you can easily select from the same inventory, select the same customer to attach retail products, and add retail revenue (daily cash sales) to your daily bottom line. Some software allows you to quickly record a check number, print a retail receipt, and credit a refund.

If retail picks up after your test, consider the ability to scan UPCs using an affordable bar code scanner. It connects to a USB port on the computer at your point-of-sale.

Your HME software should allow you to scan the UPC to automatically select the product as a line item on the cash sale, add (or override) tax where necessary, and automatically calculate the correct total retail price. Locking cash drawers and 3″ thermal receipt printers are also affordable. They’ll come in handy as your retail presence grows.
